Feeling Calm During Awake Hand Surgery
What Our Patients Told Us
At Kent Hand and Wrist, we understand that the idea of having surgery while awake can feel daunting. That’s why, in the summer of 2023, we took the time to ask our patients how they actually felt during their awake hand procedures.
We used a simple and effective method known as the Faces Anxiety Scale—a recognised tool that helps patients express their level of anxiety by choosing from a range of illustrated facial expressions, from calm to highly anxious.
What Did Our Patients Say?
We gathered feedback from 27 patients in a row who underwent awake hand surgery. Each person rated their anxiety using the Faces Scale during their procedure.
The result?
None of the patients reported feeling anxious.
In fact, every single person indicated they felt calm and comfortable throughout the process.
What Does This Mean for You?
We’re proud to say that the vast majority of people undergoing awake surgery at Kent Hand and Wrist do not find the experience stressful. Our team works hard to ensure you feel at ease from start to finish, with clear communication, gentle care, and a calm environment.
Awake hand surgery offers many benefits, including quicker recovery, fewer risks from anaesthesia, and the ability to go home the same day—and our patient feedback shows it’s also a reassuring experience.
