Hand Exercises After Minor Hand Surgery

Guidance for Early Movement and Recovery

These gentle hand exercises are recommended following simple hand procedures, including:

  • Carpal tunnel release
  • Trigger finger or trigger thumb release
  • De Quervain’s release

Starting these exercises on the same day as your surgery is essential to reduce swelling, maintain movement, and support a smoother recovery. Some discomfort is normal, but they should not cause pain. If any movement causes sharp or ongoing pain, stop and contact the clinic for guidance.

Recommended Exercises

1. Make a Full Fist
Curl your fingers tightly into your palm to form a full fist.

2. Straighten Your Fingers
Open your hand completely, extending your fingers as straight as possible.

3. Thumb-to-Finger Touches
Gently touch your thumb to the tip of each finger, one by one.

4. Finger Spreads
Spread your fingers as wide apart as possible, then bring them back together.

5. Reach Upwards
Raise your hand up toward the ceiling as high as you can, aiming to fully extend your arm.

How Often Should I Do These?

Aim to complete these exercises four times a day, doing 5–10 repetitions of each movement, depending on your comfort. Consistency is key to improving flexibility and preventing stiffness.
